If you’ve been watching the videos that take place in the Menchville area, you probably already know how much I love Riverview Farm Park. The park is located off of Menchville Rd, right by the highschool. I live just a few hundred yards down the street from the park, so I spend quite a bit of time here, especially with my dog, Brady. This multi-use park is truly one of the hidden gems of Newport News. Most people outside of Newport News have no idea it exists, or at least have never been there, and they’re seriously missing out. When I was searching for a home the park played a huge role in the location I decided to look in. To have this park within walking distance of my house is absolutely amazing. But if you don’t live close by, dont worry, there’s plenty of parking for everyone.
Having a highly energetic, three year old golden retriever you’ll frequently find me walking along the two miles of paths that weave their way through and around the park. With an outer loop of 1.56 miles and shorter loops of 1 mile, there is plenty of opportunity for you and your family to enjoy plently of exercise under the bright Virginia skies. The paved paths are perfect whether you’re walking, running, biking, or rollerblading. The open fields and beautiful landscaping make you feel like you’re out in the middle of the country where life is easier, not in the middle of a city with a population of over 180,000.
If you have young children you’ll absolutely love the 30,000 square foot playground. I had nothing like this when I was kid. I’m so jealous! The park includes several soccer fields that are used by kids of all ages, which are always busy with practice and games. There’s also a skate park, and two large covered picnic areas for public use. The large picnic shelters can be reserved by calling (757) 888-3333. They’re perfect for organization events, birthday parties, or they can be reserved for a team picnic after your soccer match. There’s even a hill where kids go sledding (on the few days a year we actually have enough snow on the ground).
Apart from the main portion of the park is the city’s first dog park, called Fido Field. One section is for all dogs, and the other is just for dogs under 20lbs. Registration for the fields is just $10 per year. Make sure your dogs are up to date with all their shots first! Or take a walk to the other side of the road towards the James River to the lookout pier. Not many people who even go to Riverview Farm Park know there is a pier that runs behind the visitor center out to the base of the Warwick River, where you can see all the way out across the James. The view from the pier is absolutely gorgeous, and it gives us all the opportunity to feel like we own waterfront property right on the James River.
So head on over to Riverview Farm Park. Get some exercise, play, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Hampton Roads. If you see me, come on over and say hi. Hope to see you there!
