The Noland Trail is easily one of my favorite places in Newport News. This five mile, immaculate trail is the perfect place for a walk, or run. Located in the Mariner’s Museum Park, off of Warwick, just south of Christopher Newport University, this trail provides a pristine getaway for dog lovers, exercisers, and good old fashioned family fun. I bring my dog, Brady, here on a regular basis to get him the exercise he needs, as well as to socialize with all the other dogs we run into along the path. (see pics here!)
With easy access, and plenty of parking, the trail enjoys a steady stream of visitors throughout the year. Along the trail you’ll enjoy the shade of the woods, along with water views of Lake Maury. The trail includes fourteen bridges that cross narrow portions of the lake, and several lookout points where you’ll frequently find bird watchers, and families alike enjoying the view. Due to the conservational nature of the area, you’ll see wildlife the way nature intended. (I saw a fish the size of my dog there last night!) There is very limited fishing allowed in Lake Maury, although boating rentals are encouraged. However no gasoline engines, or private boats are allowed on the lake. Don’t forget to look along the water by the bridges for herds of turtles like you’ve never seen before.
While the trail would make for a wonderful bike path, no mountain or motorized bikes are allowed. The trail is only about four feet wide, so for those of us with children, or walking our dog, this is a very nice feature. This definitely helps keep any accidents at a minimum, and allows everyone to enjoy free range of the trail, and each other’s company. You won’t meet a nicer group of people than those walking along the Noland Trail. You also won’t find a more well-maintained trail in Hampton Roads. The staff do an amazing job of keeping every inch clean and clear of debris.
Besides normal daily use, events are regularly held upon the trail, such as the Annual 5K and 10K Road Race. So no matter what your interests are, if you want to enjoy a fun outdoor area, right in the heart of Newport News, then the Noland Trail is for you. Take a look at the Mariner’s Museum Website for more information. Hope to see you there!
